Knowledge and Technology Transfer Workshop to Community
20 September 2019

Recently, Tropical Infectious Diseases Research & Education Centre (TIDREC) conducted a one day educational workshop for our long-term community partner, the COMBI squad from Jalan Ciku, Taman Kota Masai, Pasir Gudang, Johor. The main objective of the workshop is to expand their knowledge and skills in relation to the prevention and control of dengue, as well as other mosquito-borne diseases like Zika and chikungunya. COMBI or Communication for Behavioural Impact, is a community-based vector control program under the purview of Ministry of Health Malaysia.

The workshop comprised of a series of lectures on basic mosquito biology and ecology, dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases, followed by hands-on session on mosquito identification using stereo-microscope, and a DIY ovitrap making session.

The workshop was funded under a community grant awarded by UM’s Community & Sustainability Centre (UMCares). The workshop received further support and sponsorship from Matrix Optics (M) Sdn Bhd – the sole agent of Olympus microscope, as well as Fumakilla (Malaysia) Bhd.
